Byler Barns & Backyards began in 1972 in the town of Stuarts Draft, Virginia as Byler’s Storage Buildings. As of that time, there were no other shed manufacturers in the state of Virginia, and the only “other” backyard storage alternative was the little tin sheds available from Sears and Montgomery Ward. Bennie Byler was a home builder who realized the need for quality storage alternatives, and began testing the market with some sheds that he bought from a manufacturer in Indiana. He originally set a few sheds beside the road in front of his house, and when it became apparent that there was a good market for these sturdy little buildings, began building them himself in a friend’s chicken house. (At this early stage of our company’s history, the staple product was the “little red barn.” It is so much a part of our company history that we have incorporated this icon into our logo.) The very next year, in 1973, Mr. Byler built his own shop next to his home on Cold Springs Road in Stuarts Draft. It was this shop that manufactured (and retailed) nearly all of Byler’s products until the late 1990’s. Growing demand for more available styles and options, as well as a growing market, led Byler’s to attempt a shop expansion project to allow for the construction of more product lines. Because of the rural location of the business, the request for expansion was denied by the County. Also, around this time, Byler’s opened their first “pure” retail location on Rt. 340 between Waynesboro and Stuarts Draft. Rather than purchasing more real estate to expand the production side of the business, Byler’s simply set up a few “sub-contractor” types of relationships to build the buildings. This allowed them to focus more on better client experience and relationships, while at the same time being able to offer more product options with shorter lead times, and yet keep a firm hand on product quality. (During the years when all the buildings were built and sold at the Cold Springs Road shop, it was not uncommon to have lead times between 12 and 16 weeks throughout the summer!) During this process, in 1996, Bennie took his son Steve into the business as a partner, and the company became Byler’s Storage Buildings, Inc.
