In 1962, Edward R. May started installing industrial and commercial panels under the name Shoals Roofing Company. Within a short time the company started installing structural steel. In 1963, Edward May diversified his business and began to erect metal buildings as a sub-contractor. By 1964 Edward May was an established construction company contracting jobs that included site preparation, foundational work, concrete floors, and light metal fabrication. The company name was changed to Oakland Metal Buildings. During the next few years Oakland Metal Buildings continued to grow the business and recognized the need for vertical integration to competitively serve its customer base. Expansion of capacity included floor space, departmentalization, specialized processes, and automated equipment. By the time Oakland Metal Buildings incorporated in 1976 the company was fully integrated with all phases of metal building fabrication and erection. Edward’s son, Phillip E. May, worked in all facets of the operations from the early start-up days until Edward May’s retirement in 1995 at which point Phillip May assumed the duties of President. Phillip set about to leave his own mark upon Oakland and he did so with a great deal of energy and enthusiasm. The business began expanding its efforts beyond the regional market. Today Oakland Metal Buildings, Inc. maintains its core business in the Southeast but ships as far as California and the Northeast. Phillip E. May has transitioned away from “running the business” as he prepares for retirement. He has passed the baton to his son Jerrod Adams, who followed in his father’s footsteps by working and training in all areas of the business. Mr. Jerrod Adams now leads Oakland Metal Buildings, Inc. into a new era of metal building structures. Three generations of dedicated, determined, and devoted family provided a solid foundation for future growth and investment in this 50 year old business. The corporate icon, an oak leaf, symbolizes the strength, longevity, and majestic presence of the towering oak tree. Oakland Metal Buildings, Inc. takes great pride in its image matured through years of strong customer support, dedication to quality, and the physical presence of an Oakland Metal Building towering over its competitors. Oakland Metal Buildings, Inc. strives to emulate the grand ole oak tree some of which live over 1,000 years.
