A Home Career as a Hypnotherapist

Working from home is something most of us have dreamt of. Plying a trade in a spare room or garden office would not only save time and money, but spare us from the horrors of a commute, spending money on lunches, and office politics.

Increasingly however, many more of us are making this transition from working for a company to working for ourselves. Indeed, as the recession continues, finding alternative ways of earn a living is for many a necessity. And as many of us would also like to find more meaning in our lives, it’s the ideal time to swap the corporate life for a more rewarding profession.

Natural therapies have become main-stream in recent years, and hypnotherapy is perhaps now the most well regarded therapy of them all. Training to become a hypnotherapist then, can lead to an esteemed and satisfying occupation, in which people take precedence over profit. Not only that, but hypnotherapy is an ideal home based career.

Becoming a Hypnotherapist

Becoming a hypnotherapist requires no prior qualifications; all that’s needed is the genuine desire to help people resolve psychological patterns of thoughts and behaviours or physical problems. In order to become a hypnotherapist, it is necessary to become qualified through a course of hypnotherapy training. The industry is not currently regulated through legislation however, so finding a hypnotherapy course providing professional standard training is essential.

Regulation of Hypnotherapy Training

In the absence of an independent regulatory body, the hypnotherapy profession has joined together to set minimum standards of training and practice. This is to ensure that hypnotherapy in the UK is properly taught and administered. The General Hypnotherapy Standards Council (GHSC) and The Hypnotherapy Association, are just two such bodies who do this. The GHSC act as a link between the Department of Health, and facilitate agreed standards within the industry. The establishment of a National Occupational Standards agreement, now underpins hypnotherapy training to ensure that hypnotherapy courses are providing an agreed standard of professional training.

Finding a Hypnotherapy Training Course

To find an accredited hypnotherapy training course, you can search the online database published by the National Hypnotherapy Society for approved courses which subscribe to the National Occupational Standards. To start practicing, you will need a Diploma in Clinical Hypnotherapy, which can then be developed by taking the Diploma in Hypnotherapy and Psychotherapy (DHP) to develop and improve your practice.

Working as a Hypnotherapist

Dependent on where in the UK you are located, earnings will vary. But according to the 2009 Barclays Salary Survey, an experienced hypnotherapist can expect to earn around £38,000 a year. For the first year however, it is estimated that you will earn around £12,000 until you have gained experience and built up a reputation for effective help. It’s worth bearing in mind then, that a good quality hypnotherapy training provider, will continue to give on-going professional support and help for those just starting out.
